WHAT IS JUDO?

What is Judo?
Judo, or "The Gentle Way", was created in Japan in the late 1800s by Jigoro Kano. Kano was a Jujutsu practitioner who began to develop his own system that emphasized the larger educational value of training in attack and defense so that it could be a path or way of life that all people could participate in and benefit from. He eliminated some of the traditional jujutsu techniques and changed training methods so that most of the moves could be done with full force to create a decisive victory without injury. In 1964 was introduced into the Olympic Games and is one of the most popular Martial Arts in the world today.

OUR ADULT JUDO PROGRAM

Judo at Yamasaki Academy Springfield focuses on sport judo–big throws, submission techniques, and pins. We regularly compete in local, regional and national tournaments. A number of our members have won national trophies and several have competed in international tournaments.  Competition is encouraged, but not required.

We welcome newcomers!  Nobody is too weak or too out of shape to join. We provide beginners with training in the basics and progress students at a pace comfortable to them. As skill and endurance improve students are phased into advanced drills and live judo grappling. We recognize that different ages and different body types adjust at a different pace and work with each student to maximize their potential and ensure safety.

BENEFITS OF JUDO

Judo is an excellent form of self defense! Learning to throw someone much larger than yourself is a powerful way to stay safe when you need it. Throw in the chokes and joint locks and you can defend yourself without ever having to throw a single punch!
Judo will help every area of your conditioning! Both your cardiovascular and strength training will be taken care of in these classes. An average 1 hour Judo class will burn 600-8000 calories if you are doing it right.
Judo training takes time to master. Things that are hard garner the greatest rewards but also take a higher level of self discipline. We learn to pick ourselves up off the floor and keep going which carries through into every other part of your life.
Pay attention to the details. Judo can't be learned if you aren't paying attention to what you are being taught. Learn to concentrate on the now and make things work before deciding to move on.
Kano incorporated two fundamental principles of Judo, “Maximum Efficiency” and “Mutual Welfare and Benefit” because one cannot play Judo alone. We need a partner. This notion of learning that we need each other to help each other is an important part of Judo training.
